Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
«Annali della Fondazione Ugo Spirito e Renzo De Felice. Il Presente storico» is a scientific, peer-reviewed and open access journal inspired by the code of ethics for publications developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All parties involved [Editor, Director, Co-directors, Editorial board, Authors and Referees] know and share the contents of the code explained below which is published on the journal website.
Duties of the Direction and of the Scientific, International and Editorial Committees
Absence of discrimination: the Direction and the Committees evaluate articles proposed for publication on the basis of their content without discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, citizenship, political orientation of the authors.
Ethical aspects of research practices: the Direction and the Committees undertake to manage the policy of supervising the ethical aspects of research practices in the activity of «Annali della Fondazione Ugo Spirito e Renzo De Felice. Il Presente storico» with respect to and for the promotion of the principles of solidarity, equality, promotion of culture and freedom of intellectual research.
Confidentiality: the Direction and the Committees undertake not to disclose information about the submitted articles to any person other than the author, referees and Publisher.
Conflict of interest and disclosure: the Direction and the Committees undertake not to use in its own research the contents of an article proposed for publication without the author’s written consent. In addition, the Direction and the Committees, with the cooperation of the Publisher and the publishing company’s legal counsel, undertake to manage conflicts of interest (identifiable before and after publication) and the processes provided for their resolution, with reference to the possible stakeholders (authors, reviewers, editors, journals and publishers, scientific community) in compliance with current regulations.
Decisions on publication: the decision on whether or not to publish the proposed articles rests with the Direction (in particular, the journal Editors, having heard the opinion of the Committees if deemed appropriate). This judgement is, in any case, made on the basis of the results of the refereeing procedure (double-blind peer review), entrusted to evaluators outside the journal. Also in this regard, the Direction and the Committees, with the cooperation of the Publisher and the legal counsel of the publishing company, and in compliance with the regulations issued by the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR), with reference to the «Regulations for the classification of journals in non-bibliometric areas», approved by the Governing Council of ANVUR, by resolution of December 21, 2023, and published on January 9, 2024, undertake to manage conflicts of interest and disputes that may arise in the review process and in the manner of communicating the results of the review to the authors.
Publicising the refereeing procedure: the Direction and the Committees undertake to make the criteria of the refereeing procedure explicit and publish the names of the referees every year on the journal website.
Duties of the referees
Contribution to the editorial decision: peer-review is a procedure that assists the Direction and the Committees in making decisions on proposed articles and which, far from resulting in a negative/positive judgement, aims to allow the author to improve their contribution (pedagogical value of peer-review).
Respect for time: the referee who does not feel adequate for the proposed task or who knows that he/she will not be able to carry out the reading in the required time is obliged to inform the coordinators promptly.
Confidentiality: each text assigned for reading must be considered confidential; therefore, these texts must not be discussed with other people without explicit authorisation from the Editors.
Objectivity: peer review must be conducted objectively; any personal judgement about the author is inappropriate; referees are required to give adequate reasons for their judgements.
Indication of texts: referees undertake to precisely indicate the bibliographic references of fundamental works that may have been overlooked by the author; the referee must also inform the Editors of any similarities or overlaps of the text read with other works known to him.
Conflict of interest and disclosure: all information obtained during the peer-review process must be considered confidential and may not be used for any other purpose; referees are required not to accept articles for reading if they become indirectly and incidentally aware of the author’s name and if there is a conflict of interest with the author.
Duties of the authors
Originality and plagiarism: authors are required to declare that they have composed an original work in every part. In this regard, the Direction and the Committees are obliged to put in place ways of identifying and managing practices contrary to scientific integrity (e.g. plagiarism, reproduction from previously published works without inverted commas and/or mention of the source, or falsification of data), also with reference to external reports brought to the attention of the journal or the Editor.
Multiple, repetitive and/or competing publications: the author must not submit the same scientific article to more than one journal at the same time.
Indication of sources: the author must always provide the correct indication of sources and contributions mentioned in the article.
Authorship of the work: authorship of the work must be correctly attributed and all those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, organisation, realisation and re-elaboration of the research on which the article is based must be indicated as co-authors; if other persons have significantly participated in some phases of the research, their contribution must be explicitly acknowledged.
Conflict of interest and disclosure: authors must avoid conflicts of interest that could have affected their results or proposed interpretations; authors must also indicate any funding bodies of the research and/or project from which the article stems.
Errors in published articles: when an author identifies a relevant error or inaccuracy in one of his articles published by the journal, he/she is required to promptly inform the journal’s Direction and Committees and provide them with all the information they need to point out the relevant corrections in an errata corrige that will periodically appear on the journal’s website.
Respect for copyright: authors undertake to obtain consents and releases for the publication of texts (if not for citation purposes), data, images, graphics, included in their contributions, in compliance with current copyright law, customary disciplinary standards and any constraints related to the right to privacy as enshrined in Article 15 of the Italian Constitution.
Duties of the Editor and rights of the authors
With regard to intellectual property policies, including copyright management and publication licences, the Publisher grants full freedom to authors to republish contributions published in «Annali della Fondazione Ugo Spirito e Renzo De Felice. Il Presente storico» in scientific treatises and miscellaneous publications, and to include them in databases accredited by the international scientific community, on the strict condition that the primary site and exact date of publication are indicated.
Also with regard to intellectual property policies, including the management of copyright and publication licences, the Publisher undertakes to ensure that the acquisition of consents and releases for the publication and accessibility, even in open mode, of texts (if not for citation purposes), data, images, graphics, takes place in compliance with current copyright law, customary disciplinary standards and any constraints related to the right to privacy as enshrined in Article 15 of the Italian Constitution.
The Publisher, having heard the opinion of the Editor-in-Chief, grants the authors a broad right of reply and rectification with regard to what they have published in «Annali della Fondazione Ugo Spirito e Renzo De Felice. Il Presente storico» in order to allow the publicity of the debate following publication (e.g. the publication of reply notes or letters addressed to the Direction, the Committees or the Publisher) and the mechanisms to allow – in a documented and transparent manner for the reading public – any changes and corrections to articles already published, or their withdrawal. This concession is of course subject to compliance with the current legislation on the offence of libel and defama
